The first homebuyers grant was introduced by the Commonwealth Government to help alleviate the effects of the GST. A $7000 grant is available to first home buyers to assist them in the purchase of their first home.
There are certain criteria that must be met to obtain the first home owners grant. To qualify, you must:
- be a permanent resident or citizen of Australia.
- not already own, or have owned a property. If you are married, this includes property held in either your name or your partner's.
- intend to live in the property and move into within one year of purchase.
- Buyers of new homes have 26 weeks after entering a contract to begin construction and have 18 months to complete construction
Formerly, an additional grant was offered to first homebuyers building a new home. This grant is no longer available.
